(SQAUK) – A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was involved in an incident that required a significant rescue operation. The aircraft, which was part of a convoy, experienced difficulties and made a “hard landing” in a remote area near Jolfa in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.
President Raisi returned from the Iran-Azerbaijan border, where he and Azerbaijani President Aliyev inaugurated a cooperative dam project, marking warming relations between the nations.
The incident occurred during challenging weather conditions, including heavy rain, fog, and wind, which complicated the rescue efforts. Despite initial reports identifying the location of the downed helicopter, the Iranian Red Crescent later dismissed these reports.
Iranian state television interrupted its programming to broadcast prayers for President Raisi’s safety. At the same time, twenty rescue teams and an unspecified number of drones have been sent to assist in the search.
Among those traveling with President Raisi were Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan Province Malek Rahmati, and Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Ale-Hashem, the Supreme Leader’s representative to East Azerbaijan.
As the world watches, the search for President Raisi and other officials continues, hoping they will be found safe.
